NEW SUNSETTERS? TWENTY-MINUTE SONG!!!
Feb 09 2003, 04:42 PM in 🌊 [DISCUSSION] We Excavate
Wow.

Wow.

That was an experience. Each song was its own world. A different section of the sea. United by the sound of that synth, and carried by the bass like the bass was the true narrator.
"Oxen of the Sea" drenched me in mystery, only for "We Excavate" to zap me with lightning bolts of clarity. The vocal duets halfway through were such a highlight, that was Queen-like perfection. What can't this band do?
"The Lonely Seas" washed me over, refreshed me, took me on a journey, cheered me up, and "Already Out of Breath" gave me unadulterated beauty, I feel like Sunsetters took me by the hand and showed me the extravagant expanse of the natural ocean, colorful fish soaring in the distance, kelp forests stretching as far as the eye can see, and a whale as large as a mountain barely visible, shadowed, on the horizon.
"The Sinking Song" brought back the mystery, brought back the danger. A Doppelganger... the dangers of symmetry... and excellent riffs.
"Siren of the Abyss" gave me a moment to breathe, which I sorely needed, I realized I was dripping with sweat by this point, the music had been carrying me!
And then "Lowest Point." This is a song we are going to be talking about for YEARS. It has everything! EvERYTHING! It has the BEST riffs, the BEST melodies, it is HARD ROCK! It has the most FRAGILE, SADDEST moments! We went from titans under the sea to some godly breakup in the SAME SONG. I honestly had to stop myself from crying at times, the breakup stuff hit me hard, but I had to focus, I can't just CRY when I'm listening to the new Sunsetters album, I need to PAY ATTENTION!
But then comes "In the Sunken Blue."
They ended us on a hit. This has to play on the radio. They HAVE to talk to the label about that. Because "In the Sunken Blue" is so steady, it's like a dub beat over a Depeche Mode song. I didn't want it to end. I didn't want this ALBUM to end. It's so different from Summer Sucks, but it has the same talent to it, clearly.

I need tolisten to this more. I need to study the lyrics. I need to.. I need to work on an essay that's due tomorrow, oh shit. I DON'T WANT TO WRITE, ALL I WANT IS SUNSETTERS

Is he Conquest, Famine, or Death... that's the deep question. He wanders Earth, surrounded by death... does that make him Death? There's little talk of food, so I don't really see him being Famine. But Conquest... yes, I believe he is Conquest. He meets so many strange figures, like Chorus, Isis, the Pig King, Veles, Canio. And he conquers them all. Nobody truly defeats him, he always keeps going. And at the end, he's at the foot of Yggdrasil in a new world. The foot of the World Tree... the ultimate throne for Lucius the hero.

I don't think he conquers Chorus or Isis, and he definitely doesn't conquer Canio.
Chorus asks him to slay the cyclops, and he does, he literally does as she asks. We hear her voice haunting him later in Tired Anthem, "Trapped in birth, aging illness death... In suffering, you're mine." That says it all. She conquers him.
And Isis, what do we really know about it? It shows up at the end of Infenro, it tells Lucius the state of the world. Lucius doesn't fight or argue or contradict. There's.. nothing to conquer. Isis is merely "there."
And Canio... well, Canio turns into a bird and flies away at the last minute. A mockingbird. He mocks Lucius. He transcends, I'm pretty sure he gets away with everything. He's the real victor of the story!
Oh but the jazziness works, imho! "Hidden in the Trees" is also plenty jazzy, if not jazzier, which gets me ready for what "Rise" will do!

There's a lot more repetition on this album, I find. Shorter songs with more repetition. On Summer Sucks a song like "Perfection" would only be a single movement, somewhere in "Pig Bruiser" or "Fountain of Mab". But on Mythology it stands alone. I think that is a sign of a debut album.

Oh man! I know exactly which pillar you mean. I was further back, near the merch counter. That's where I got my shirt lmao!

Mab was THE highlight. They exhausted me with Inferno and then massaged my ears with Mab... got me singing along with those choruses... when, how... postmortemity...

I went with my boyfriend, he had never heard of Sunsetters (much like me a week ago), and he just stood there the whole time like a deer in headlights, he had NO idea what he was getting himself into. I told him afterwards that I had the same reaction!
